As we jump ahead to John 12:1-26 this week, we will journey with Jesus to a friend’s house and observe something extraordinary. One of his followers will express her love to Jesus in an extravagant way that should teach us how to value our Savior and adore Him. We’ll learn that Jesus is worthy of costly worship. At the same time, however, we will also see just how much hatred continues to mount against Jesus. Tensions with the Jews are rising. Jesus’ time has finally come. After entering Jerusalem for the third Passover of his ministry, despite being treated like royalty at first, Jesus will begin his literal ascent to a criminal’s execution. The mood mingles an ominous sense of finality with a triumphant air of mission nearly accomplished. Both the wonders and horrors of the cross are in our view!
